In our American culture we tend to evaluate ourselves based upon external criteria such as weight, size, and outside appearances. As a result, many people have become addicted to ‘diets’ as the way to personal transformation. Each and every diet attempted becomes the next solution to attaining that magical number on the scale or clothing size. The magical thinking leads to the ideal that then all of life’s challenges will be solved. Unfortunately, over 98% of diets fail and the vicious cycle of frustration leads to additional weight gain and even lower self esteem. What is wrong with this approach? Any other medical treatment that held these terrible results would not be allowed to continue.
 
What is needed is an inside-out approach to develop the internal cues versus the influence of external cultural values of beauty and excessive thinness. Yoga brings enhanced self awareness allowing physical, psychological, and emotional realities to shift helping individuals to become less influenced by the external forces of modern culture and more anchored in an internal value system. In this way, yoga becomes a valuable tool for behavior changes. By connecting mind and body we can become aware of lifestyle habits, behaviors, and attitudes that no longer serve us and make necessary changes to enhance wellness and weight management.
